Dufftown
Highland Games
Athletic games have a long history in Scotland . There is a tradition that the Clan Chiefs, as long ago as the 11th century, held contests to find their fastest runners and toughest fighting men. This formed the basis of The Games as we now know them.
The highlight of the year, like many other villages
and towns in the Highlands , Dufftown is proud to host their own
Highland Games a tradition dating back over 150 years.
Events include throwing the hammer, tossing the caber, tug-of-war,
running, jumping, plus a great display of highland dancing and piping
competitions.
The Dufftown Highland Games is known as a Massed Band Event. Some
Highland Games feature only two or three Pipe Bands, but Dufftown
goes to great expense to provide many bands, thus providing a spectacular
display, which stirs memories for a long time. For further information
please contact the Secretary on Scotland , UK (01340) 820265
or the Chairman on (01340) 820487 or email james.murray@dufftownhighlandgames.org
or visit the Dufftown Highland Games website at www.dufftownhighlandgames.org
The games are held on the last Saturday in July.
Ceilidh
A traditional ceilidh is held every Thursday from May to September at either the Commercial Hotel or the British Legion. An evening of traditional music, singing and dancing featuring local artistes. Everyone is welcome so why not come along for a great evening.
The first Ceilidh of the season will be held on 22nd May 2003 .
The last Ceilidh of the season will be held on 12th September 2003 .
Bagpipes
There are few more stirring sights and sounds in Scotland
than the pipes, drums and dress tartans of a pipe band.
The Dufftown Pipe Band invites you to their practice sessions, held
every Tuesday at the British Legion, and in fine weather in the
car park after practice.
Scottish Country Dancing
A warm welcome, during those cold winter evenings, awaits all visitors at the Memorial Hall, on Tuesdays, when Dufftown Country Scottish Dance Club hold their classes 7.00- 9.30pm .
Classes start from 7th January - 8th April and then again from 7th October - 9th December.
Come and join in the traditional Scottish dancing and traditional
music.
Ben
Rinnes
Or just spend the day walking around the beautiful and breath-taking
scenery at Ben Rinnes, just a 30 minute walk from Davaar.
Ben Rinnes is a satisfying hill to climb as you gain height very steadily and can see the summit almost all the way up. The track goes over the 411m Round Hill and then climbs again to the 535m top of Roy's Hill.
